Dettifoss Waterfall

Dettifoss is Europe’s most powerful waterfall, with an immense force that can even be felt through the ground — nearby rocks seem to vibrate with its energy. The waterfall is about 45 meters high and 100 meters wide, creating a spectacular natural display in the dramatic canyon of Jökulsá á Fjöllum.
This glacial river features several impressive waterfalls, including Selfoss just upstream and Hafragilsfoss further below. The ever-changing landscape reflects Iceland’s young and dynamic geology, where erosion and volcanic forces continuously shape the terrain.

Getting there

Dettifoss waterfall can be reached from both sides of the canyon:

  • The western route follows paved road 862, suitable for all vehicles in summer. Winter maintenance is irregular, so please check road conditions before your trip. See here https://umferdin.is/en/road/91028
  • The eastern route, road 864, is gravel and usually closed during winter months.

Whichever path you take, the sheer power and raw beauty of Dettifoss promise an unforgettable experience in Iceland’s wild northeast.
